10th,March,2008 - The Food and
Drug Administration said a proposed postsurgery muscle drug made by
Schering-Plough Corp. appears to be safe for use in adult patients,
although there is some chance of allergic reaction.
According to
the FDA panel, the drug, sugammadex, would be used to reverse the
effects of muscle-paralyzing drugs used in some surgeries. It is
estimated that about half of patients undergoing surgery receive some
type of product to induce complete muscle paralysis, along with other
drugs used to make a person unconscious.
The FDA said an updated
safety review of the drug would be presented at tomorrow's panel
meeting, which could shed more light on allergic reactions to it.
